Definition of Catathrenia

Definition: Catathrenia is a parasomnia that is characterized by groaning during sleep. The sound is produced during exhalation and may be preceded by the individual holding his breath.

Catathrenia is distinct from somniloquy and sleep apnea.

Examples: My husband suffers from catathrenia, and he often holds his breath and groans while he is asleep.
