Definition of Neurotransmitter

Definition: A chemical that serves to transmit signals between the synapse (or gap) between nerve cells, or neurons. These signals may excite or inhibit a nearby neuron or muscle cell. Specific neurotransmitters include serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, GABA, and acetylcholine.
Examples:
Neurotransmitters relay messages between nerve cells.
