Definition: Part of the brain located above the pituitary gland, it controls numerous body functions and maintains a balance called homeostasis. These functions include the regulation of hunger, thirst, body temperature, breathing, internal organ activity, and sleep.
Pronunciation: hi-poh-thal-uh-muss
Examples: My partner has an extremely poor appetite and I wonder if his hypothalamus is the cause.
