The pharmaceutical drug Lunesta (eszopiclone) is one of the hypnotic drugs commonly prescribed to help initiate or maintain sleep to treat insomnia.

Uses of Lunesta

There are many hypnotic drugs used to safely and effectively treat insomnia and acute insomnia. One of these is Lunesta. Like all of these drugs, Lunesta is helpful in initiating sleep. However, it is especially useful in maintaining sleep because it stays in the body longer than similar agents.

How Does Lunesta Work?

Neurotransmitters are chemicals that serve as messengers between nerve cells (neurons). Lunesta works by binding to the GABA receptor, a special type of neurotransmitter receptor, promoting a calming effect.

Who Should Not Use Lunesta?

Like similar agents, this medication should not be taken with alcohol or with other drugs that suppress the central nervous or respiratory systems, as it may slow or stop your breathing. If you have a history of alcohol abuse, drug abuse, depression, psychiatric disorders, lung, or liver problems, you probably should not take this medication. It should be used with caution in those who are elderly or debilitated.

What Are Common Side Effects of Lunesta?

Although an individual would not be expected to experience most side effects of Lunesta -- and may indeed not have any of them -- some may include:

  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth; dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Sleepiness
  • Dizziness
  • Infection
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Upset stomach
  • Nervousness; anxiety
  • Depression
  • Rash
  • Painful menstruation
  • Enlarged breast tissue (notably in men)
  • Confusion
  • Decreased sexual interest
  • Hallucinations

What Are Potential Serious Reactions of Lunesta?

With the use of any drug, there are also risks of serious side effects. These occur more rarely with Lunesta, but can include:

  • Worsening depression
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Hallucinations
  • Memory loss
  • Complex sleep-related behavior (such ad doing activities while asleep)
  • Withdrawal with abrupt cessation
  • Anaphylaxis (allergic reaction such as throat swelling and difficulties breathing)

What Safety Precautions and Monitoring Should Occur When Taking Lunesta?

Lunesta should be avoided in pregnancy and with breastfeeding. As above, certain individuals should use the medication with caution or not at all. There is no monitoring necessary with its use. If you experience any difficulties, you should be in close contact with your primary health provider.
