Yin and Yang

Yin and Yang

Sounds a bit kinky, doesn't it? Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your expectations,) Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway) refers to your décor. What's the most important room in the house? No. Not the kitchen or the family room. It's the bedroom where you should be spending at least eight hours very night wrapped in the arms of sleep.

Feng shui is a Chinese concept and is a way of creating balance and harmony, not just in the bedroom, but in the entire house and in your life. It's a method of balancing the yin (feminine) and yang (masculine)aspects of life.

Much thought should go into the décor of the bedroom, where peace and harmony is so important. Here are a few tips:

  • Use pastel colors - blues, greens, pale yellows. Avoid reds and other brilliant colors that can keep the mind active and derail sleep.
  • never place the bed so you sleep with your back to the doorway. The best position is diagonally across from the door, but not facing it directly.
  • Never pace the bed under a window. In fact, if possibly, don’t have it on the same wall as a window.
  • A solid wooden bed is best. Place the head against a wall. A good, solid headboard is best. It gives a person a sense of support and protection.
  • Avoid a bed full of fluffy pillows. Plain décor is best here.
  • Work stations have no place in a bedroom. Avoid having things like desks and computers anywhere near the bed.
  • For a really good sleep, cover the mirrors. Sometimes a reflection of your own movement in the glass can be startling and disrupt the harmony.
  • TVs really don't belong in the bedroom either. If you do have one, make sure it's off before you try to sleep, and better still, throw a cover over the screen.
  • Do you really need to have a telephone in the room? If you consider it a necessity, let acquaintances know you don't appreciate late night calls. Of course, this doesn't eliminate wrong numbers and crank calls.
  • A neat room increases harmony. Clutter disrupts it.
  • Cover the windows with heavy drapes or blinds and, if you have a bathroom in the bedroom, shut the door.
  • There should be nothing above the bed (ceiling fans, heavy light fixtures) or stored beneath the bed.

It's all about keeping surroundings harmonious, and doesn’t' that make sense? Feng shui creates good chi energy and chi energy is life force. Lots of good books exist on feng shui. Watch for an upcoming list of the best of the crop. In the meantime, think peace. Think harmony, Think sleep.
