A clinical sleep study uses polysomnography or PSG to determine if a patient suffers from sleep apnea. It requires an overnight stay at the sleep lab with electrodes attached to the body. SleepStrip offers an alternative that won't replace the PSG, but offers an easy and inexpensive method of prescreening patients suspected of suffering from sleep apnea. Clinical studies have shown that SleepStrip results are accurate when measured against those of PSG.
Patients suffering from sleep apnea are a greater risk of airway collapse during surgery. SleepStrip could prove invaluable for prescreening patients.
SleepStrip is simple, noninvasive, and can be used in the privacy of the patient's home. It's also far less costly than a night at a sleep lab.
SleepStrip is applied by the patient before going to sleep. During the patients normal sleep pattern, the electro-chemical and microprocessor controlled technology measures fluctuations in airflow. Upon removing the SleepStrip after no less than 5 hours sleep, a mathematical algorithm converts these airflow measurements into a quantitative output that provides the physician with an indication of if, and how, severe the patients OSA may be.
SleepStrip is the only product of its kind on the market. It's manufactured under ISO standards and has been cleared by the FDA and has CE approval. It has also been validated by leading international decision makers. It's an all-in-one system and no additional equipment is required.
Once the test has been administered during five or more hours of sleep, the results are permanently displayed on the device, as follows:
- 0 = No sleep apnea - less than 15 results an hour.
- 1 = Mild sleep apnea - 15 to 24 events per hour.
- 2 = Moderate sleep apnea - 25 to 39 events per hour.
- 3 = Severe sleep apnea - 40 or more events per hour.
- E = Error - study too short or other problems.
SleepStrip is a single use device. Once used, the results are permanently etched on the display. Because sleep apnea is a medical disorder, and needs to be officially diagnosed and treated by a physician, you must acquire a physicians prescription to get a SleepStrip.
The SleepStrip is distributed by Medline in the US and is manufactured by SLP, Ltd. in Israel. Medline is dedicated to providing high quality products and sells in every state and more than 20 countries. SLP, Ltd. SLP is the world's leading sleep disorder manufacturing manufacturer.
Other sleep related in-home tests include BiteStrip for detecting bruxism and KickStrip for detecting periodic limb movements. SLP also supplies lab sensors for sleep laboratories.
