How Is Sleep Apnea Diagnosed?

This page contains links to articles and information on the various ways sleep apnea can be diagnosed.
Look Into My Eyes
A recent news release reveals that UIC researchers are investigating the feasibility of using a measure of pupil size as a means of objectively diagnosing sleep disorders like narcolepsy and sleep apnea.
Are You Sleepy?
Sleep apnea sufferers may not receive the treatment they need if they describe their daytime condition as fatigued or tired instead of using the term sleepy.
Diagnostic Tools
There are many tests you or your doctor can administer to determine if you suffer from a sleep disorder.
SleepStrips
A clinical sleep study uses polysomnography or PSG to determine if a patient suffers from sleep apnea. It requires an overnight stay at the sleep lab with electrodes attached to the body. SleepStrip offers an alternative that won't replace the PSG, but offers an easy and inexpensive method of prescreening patients suspected of suffering from sleep apnea. Clinical studies have shown that SleepStrip results are accurate when measured against those of PSG.
The Bedbugg
Going to a sleep lab is a nerve wracking experience. Some people find it impossible to sleep hooked up to numerous wires and sensors, and under the watchful eye of a technician. Now there's an alternative. Now there's the Bedbugg!

The Shape We're In
A recent news story reported that people with round heads are more likely to snore and become victims of sleep apnea than people with heads of other shapes.
Watch PAT by Itamar
Itamar Medical Ltd. has now developed a techololgy to use the PAT signal for at-home testing for obstructive sleep apnea. The technology, called Watch PAT has received both FDA and CE certification. On June 7, 2004, the respected Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement (ICSI) in Minnesota has approved home portable testing for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as a viable option for diagnosing sleep disorders.
Fly Me To the Stars!
If you snore or suffer from sleep related breathing problems, like sleep apnea, you might find it beneficial to catch the shuttle to outer space.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea Screening Quiz
Unlike adults with sleep apnea, who are often overweight and frequently wake up at night, children with OSA are more difficult to recognize and diagnosis. Quiz written by Dr. Vince Iannelli, About Guide to Pediatrics.
The Sleep Lab
This is Part Two of "I Have Sleep Apnea," last week's article. This was submitted to my forum, and describes Webergal's experience in the Sleep Lab.

This is a Press Release about the PAT Signal - New Technology To Improve Diagnosis/Management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), Sleep Fragmentation and Abnormal Respiratory Patterns During Sleep
White Coat Hypertension
A breakthrough study cited in the March edition of"Chest" suggests that people diagnosed with sleep apnea may often be wrongly diagnosed as also suffering from hypertension (high blood pressure.) Instead they may be suffering from white coat hypertension, an increase in blood pressure during a visit to the doctor's office and normal blood pressure at all other times.
