Sage

Sage

When I began reading about the herbs that could be used to relieve insomnia and other sleep problems, I found such a variety that I decided to prepare an alphabetical list giving the basic information on each one and a link to a page where you can find more information.

The reason so many herbs are beneficial in the treatment of sleep disorders is that herbs are synergetic. They work on one problem, for instance a digestive disorder or nervous tension - and by relieving that problem they improve the entire functioning of the body and lead to other improvements, such as better sleep.

An example of this is the recent news bulletin announcing that the shrub, butcher's broom, long recognized as a remedy for varicose veins and hemorrhoids, was also helpful for controlling restless legs syndrome.

Some of the herbal remedies mentioned by my readers are valerian, kava kava, passion flower and lemon balm. You'll find information on all of these in my list. Another reader reports that he gets a good night's sleep if he includes some of the more common herbs with his meal -- tarragon, sage, thyme or parsley. I have sage and thyme listed below.

One reader is about to try cannabis tea. He says it's permitted for medical use in his country. I haven't reviewed it here because of the illegality of marijuana in many countries.

LIST OF HERBS FOR SLEEP PROBLEMS

WARNINGIf you're pregnant, nursing, or if you suffer from any chronic disease, don't take any of these remedies without first consulting your doctor.
  • BLACK COHOSH-This Native American herb is relaxing. Eases pain, such as that from neuralgia. It's also excellent for female problems. Large doses can be harmful and can cause nausea and dizziness.
  • BONESET- Another herb from America. Calms the nerves. It can cause nausea in a small number of people.
  • CALIFORNIA POPPY ROOT- Eases anxiety and nervousness that can cause sleeplessness.
  • CAMOMILE (CHAMOMILE)- This herb promotes well-being. It's good for the digestion, is relaxing and generally soothing. A cup of chamomile tea before bedtime is an excellent way to encourage sleep If you have a history of allergies, however, especially to plants such as ragweed, you shouldn't use chamomile.
