NARCOLEPSY

A frequent desire for sleep, often uncontrollable.  Excessive daytime sleepiness.  Often accompanied by hallucinations.  Sometimes causes a condition called cataplexy, the sudden, unexpected weakness in the muscles and even total paralysis lasting from a few seconds to several minutes.

SYMPTOMS:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Cataplexy (loss of muscle strength, especially during emotional episodes - anger, crying, laughter
  • Hallucinations
  • Sleep paralysis
TREATMENT

Research continues, but at the moment there is no known cure for narcolepsy.  If you are a victim, you will have to try to adjust your life style to compensate for the disorder.  These are some prescription medications that may help, but take your doctor's advice as to what will help your particular case.

Antidepressants to Help with Cataplexy, Hallucinations and Sleep Paralysis

  • Wellbutrin
