Sudden infant death syndrome -- SIDS or crib death -- is the biggest killer of children under one year of age, and affects more than 6000 families a year.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: Varies

Here's How:

  1. Before the baby is born, see your doctor on a regular basis and practice good prenatal care.
  2. Don't smoke while you are pregnant, and try to eliminate your exposure to second-hand smoke.
  3. Eliminate smoking in your home after the baby is born.
  4. Don't use loose or very soft blankets or quilts in the crib, and use a firm crib mattress.
  5. Never put baby to sleep on a pillow or use a pillow in the crib
  6. Keep baby's room at an even temperature, not too cool or too warm.
  7. Place the baby on its back rather than on the stomach.
  8. Babies who sleep with a pacifier are less likely to become victims of SIDS.
  9. Babies should always sleep alone, not with parents or siblings.

Tips:

  1. SIDS is not caused by neglect or abuse.
  2. SIDS is not anyone's fault.
  3. Take reasonable care, but don't wear yourself out with endless worry.
