Sudden infant death syndrome -- SIDS or crib death -- is the biggest killer of children under one year of age, and affects more than 6000 families a year.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: Varies
Here's How:
- Before the baby is born, see your doctor on a regular basis and practice good prenatal care.
- Don't smoke while you are pregnant, and try to eliminate your exposure to second-hand smoke.
- Eliminate smoking in your home after the baby is born.
- Don't use loose or very soft blankets or quilts in the crib, and use a firm crib mattress.
- Never put baby to sleep on a pillow or use a pillow in the crib
- Keep baby's room at an even temperature, not too cool or too warm.
- Place the baby on its back rather than on the stomach.
- Babies who sleep with a pacifier are less likely to become victims of SIDS.
- Babies should always sleep alone, not with parents or siblings.
Tips:
- SIDS is not caused by neglect or abuse.
- SIDS is not anyone's fault.
- Take reasonable care, but don't wear yourself out with endless worry.
