March 28th to April 3rd is has been designated annual National Sleep Awareness Week 2005. During this week, a nationwide campaign strives to make people more aware of the need for getting adequate sleep and the dangers of sleep deprivation.

Captive birds drastically reduce how long they sleep during the times they would be migrating without any deterioration in their ability to function. In fact, that ability seemed to improve. However, if the birds are deprived of sleep at a time when they wouldn't be migrating, performance is impaired. Perhaps, researchers can determine a way for this ability to be of benefit to people suffering from sleep deprivation or who are victims of significant sleep problems.
