In the aftermath of multiple reports of air traffic controllers caught sleeping on the job, a major shake-up of the U.S. air traffic system is underway while former and current controllers report the need for naps.
The chief of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered a review of the entire system after four separate incidents involving controllers asleep on the job. Most recently, a pilot was unable to contact a controller in Reno to land overnight with a critically ill patient.
But controllers contest that the long hours, often at night, require opportunities to nap. However, FAA regulations specifically forbid sleeping while at work, even while on break. This raises the imperative need for discussion of the importance of proper sleep habits, especially when working night shifts.
