In an intriguing recent study, researchers suggest that highly caffeinated energy drinks may be dangerous for children and young adults.
After reviewing the available scientific literature, the study authors learned that 30 to 50 percent of adolescents reportedly consume energy drinks. The concern is that these drinks, which can contain large quantities of caffeine, may lead to adverse consequences in youth. These problems may include seizures, diabetes, heart abnormalities (such as a fast heart rate or palpitations), and mood or behavioral changes.
In 2007, there were 5,448 overdoses related to caffeine and 46 percent of these occurred in youth who were less than 19 years old. The authors further question whether these largely unregulated products may contain ingredients that may be harmful.
