What Influences Sleep the Most? How Much You Work.
Thursday September 20, 2007
A study in the journal SLEEP showed that the number of hours a person works is the most important factor in determining how much he or she sleeps. Using data from a large survey of over 47,000 people - people who did more activities slept less (no shock there). The interesting finding was that the number of hours of work was the most important factor in determining total sleep.
Other factors that related to fewer sleep hours were travel. Add those together - a long commute and long hours and you have a lot of very tired people.
Our suggestion - employers need to start being innovative with employee hours. Allowing work-from-home days will let employees skip the commute and get more sleep. Allowing employees to come in early and leave early could also lessen the commute times. This should lead to healthier, more productive employees - every body wins.
